Sustainable agriculture project

Sustainable agriculture project in the Amazon

This project aims to preserve 100 hectares of native forest in the state of Amapá, near the town of Cutias.

We seek to support families living in this area to make the planting and conservation of these trees an economically viable activity, an important initiative at a time when deforestation is occurring at such a rapid pace. For decades cattle ranching has been the main economic activity in the region, accounting for 80% of the Amazon forest loss.

Cattle ranchers are caught in this vicious cycle: they cut down the forest to form pastures that are quickly exhausted by the loss of nutrients in the soil. Without nutrients, meat production per hectare decreases, so the cattle ranchers look elsewhere, turning other stretches of forest into pastures until those soils are also exhausted.

But since agroforestry systems require much less land than cattle, they could relieve the pressure on the remaining forest.

Natural forests preserve the biome, protect the soil and water, and are an important carbon sink alleviating the impacts of climate change.

The project helps families living in extreme poverty who need the forest to survive, by collecting fruit and selling it.

We believe that agroforestry projects represent a model for recovering parts of the Amazon, especially pastures that have been abandoned because they are no longer able to support livestock, which corresponds to more than half of the deforested land.

Reforestation is a reality in this area and every year new trees appear.

Get involved in this project. You can help by planting seedlings or just contributing to the preservation of this important ecosystem.
