Carnauba Project

Carnauba Project

This project seeks to preserve 200 hectares of carnauba forest in the state of Ceará. In the last decades, due to the devaluation of vegetable wax prices, the carnauba has once again started to be cleared for the introduction of other productive activities, such as irrigated agriculture and shrimp farming.

This project will neutralize more than 5 million tons of CO2 emissions over the next 50 years.

The carnauba (Copernicia prunifera) is a palm tree of the Arecaceae family that is endemic to the semiarid region of Northeastern Brazil.

It is the symbol tree of the state of Ceará, known as the "tree of life", because of its wide range of applications. The roots have medicinal use as an efficient diuretic and antivenom; the fruits are a rich nutrient for animal feed; the trunk is a quality wood for construction; the palm fronds are used for handicraft, soil fertilization, and extraction of wax (carnauba wax), a valuable input for various industrial products such as cosmetics, medicine capsules, electronic components, food products, polishing waxes, coatings, and lubricants.

Because it is a tree adapted to the semi-arid climate, carnauba offers great possibilities for use in economic activities even during the dry season, and is therefore an important alternative for family incomes in rural communities.

Carnauba forests are predominant in the floodplains of the main rivers of Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão, fulfilling important functions for the maintenance of the ecological balance of the region, such as the conservation of soils, wildlife, water courses and springs.

We at Carbon Lifecycle are committed to the conservation of this important forest, which helps in the preservation and local ecological balance, including important springs.

In the 200 hectares of the project many families make a living from handicraft items produced from fallen palm fronds.

We also promote small-scale production of organic beans among the carnauba trees, as an important staple for the families that sustain the forest.

We develop our own seeds in the laboratory, which are planted every month for the recovery of the forest.

Reforestation is a reality in this area, and new trees are planted every month.

Get involved in this project. You can help by planting seedlings or just contributing to the preservation of this important ecosystem.
